St Mary's is famous for the tallest spire in Cambridgeshire, supported on elegant flying buttresses from the massive tower below. The south chapel is dedicated to Sir Harry Smith, Britain's most decorated soldier and 'The Hero of Aliwal', who was born in the town and buried there. St Mary's opens regularly and for a small fee you can go up the church tower.
