The Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival celebrates an old custom that on the Tuesday following Plough Monday (1st Monday after the Twelfth Night) one of the confraternity of the plough was dressed in straw and called a ‘Straw bear’. Today sees the ‘Straw Bear’ on the streets accompanied by his attendant keeper, musicians and dancers. Various public houses are visited around the town as convenient places for the ‘bear’ and dancers to perform in front of an audience.

March St Georges Fayre is held on the last Sunday in April, the town centre streets are pedestrianised creating space for a bustling street market and fun fair. Don’t miss the opening parade in celebration of St George into the market place followed by live music and dance performances throughout the day. There is a wide variety of entertainment free of charge.

An open air stage is set up in West End Park for the weekend and the programme encompasses music and activities to appeal to all ages and tastes. Festival goers enjoy bands from a number of genres including popular music, dance, jazz, brass and Folk. There is also a funfair and children’s activities in the park throughout the weekend and a variety of food vendors.

For one day every June Wisbech puts the beach into Wis-beach. Sand was shipped into the town overnight and an array of candy floss and other stalls – and of course deck chairs – brought the seaside deep into the heart of the Fens. A coconut shy, beach bar, crazy golf and of course Punch and Judy helped to complete an impressive line-up.

Wisbech Rose Fair is a magnificent event that takes over the town of Wisbech in early July each year. At the Fair’s heart is St Peter and St Pauls church and its magnificent floral arrangements using local and exotic blooms in breath-taking displays. Other churches join in the festivities with beautiful floral displays, all within easy walking distance of the town centre, with its shops, restaurants, cafes and market stalls.
In St Peter’s Gardens you can wander amongst a variety of local produce with fresh fruit and vegetables, plants, cakes and preserves, plus crafts and gifts. This fantastic market stalls and exhibits spills over into Museum Square (in front of Wisbech Castle) and is joined by musical entertainment and exhibitions.
On the Saturday the whole town comes alive with the parade of floats organised by Wisbech Road Table and involves a host of local groups and organisations showing their skills and enthusiasm for the days entertainment.

Whittlesey festival is a relaxing day for all the family held on the first Sunday of September. The event starts with a community parade through the town flanked by an impressive classic car display. The church yard green and the memorial garden play host to a wide selection of entertainment. The market place is a hive of activity with live singers, musicians, marching bands and dance displays throughout the day. Speciality stalls line the streets including a craft fair and exhibition on station road and broad street respectively.
